Another Double IPA festival has come and gone. The 10th annual one actually. It was a beautiful day, sun was out and the double IPAs were there to be tasted. I was slow getting going the morning of the festival but bolstered by my friend Chris wanting to go, I made it to the festival only a few hours after it started. Some of the IPAs were tapped already. The one I was the most disappointed about missing was Fat Heads Hop Juju from Matt Cole from Cleveland, OH.
That said – we tasted some damn good double IPAs. Bear Republic 11 kicked butt as did the Drakes Quaser. Not surprisingly the Green Flash Pallet Wrecker didn’t just have a great name but also had great flavor, amazing amount of hop flavor. Aren’t hops too expensive to have this kind of showing? Fifty eight hop filled beers were available at the festival, and they didn’t just have a little bit of hops, we are talking 100+ IBUs in most of these beers. Moylands Moylander XX IPA hit the 140 IBU levels!
Other good ones tasted at The Bistro…Sierra Nevada had a fine entry with the Hoptimum and Triple Rock as usual brought a great beer to the fest with the IIMAXX Imperial IPA. One I could drink on any night.
So who won? Straight from the source (with the colors from the Bistro website):
Gold: Pizza Port Carlsbad, Welcome Back Wipeout
Silver: Rubicon Sacramento, Hop Sauce
Bronze: Triple Rock Berkeley, IIMAXX Imperial IPA
Peoples Choice: Russian River Santa Rosa, Pliny the Younger
Sadly I only got to taste the Bronze (and what a bronze it was). I tried to taste the Pizza Port but it was tapped. And the Rubicon – I just didn’t get to it. Time to go to Sacramento. Thank you Vik and Cynthia for holding a great party as usual. Makes me want to brew a double IPA.
