Deus Brut Des Flandres

Update by Joe: Was reading Michael Jackson’s Great Beers of Belgium last night and came to the section about Deus. He, along with Garrett Oliver and Fred Eckhardt, tasted it and thought it was one of the best beers they had ever had. The flavor profile was also real different then what we tasted. I guess I will need to give this one another try sometime in 2008. I think it went bad either at the store we got it from or in my fridge. Another beer resolution for 2008 – learn to properly store beer that I buy.

Joe gives Deus Brut Des Flandres a try. At an average of over $30 a bottle, it’s one of the most expensive beers we’ve ever had.

Neither of us loved it overly much. In fact, we didn’t even finish the bottle. It was way too carbonated for me–I don’t like champagne or soda because of the carbonation, so that made it undrinkable for me. Joe just thought its strong apple aroma and taste covered up a lot of the other flavors in the beer. There is a chance that it had gone bad. The first smell that hit us was not a completely pleasant one. People on Ratebeer.com, however, seem to love it. I guess it just isn’t our thing. With all the great beer out there to try it will be tough to justify getting this one again.
