SF Beer Week: Bistro’s Double IPA Festival

By Jasmine · February 8th, 2009 · 3 Comments

Joe and a Beer At Joe’s regular Dan got an early start on this one,Dan, with Beer though by the time they arrived the Bistro was already packed. They jumped right in to tasting.

Denise Jones from Moylan’s and Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River were both around to talk about and taste the beer. Joe got to chat with Vinnie for a minute about the differences between Pliny the Younger (which he tried Friday night) and the Elder (a perennial favorite)–the main difference seems to be the alcohol content and the malt used to balance things out.

Dan and Joe’s favorites were, in no particular order:

Drakes Denogginizer (9.5%)

21st Amendment Double Trouble (9.8%)

Sierra Nevada Hop Secret 393 (7.1%)

with the suprise hit of the day being Auburn Alehouse’s Isotope PU240 (8.6%). It was a surprise because none of us had ever heard of this Auburn, CA brewery before, yet their IPA was up there with the best and most of the Aubern Alehouse brewers were there to represent.

The official winners of the day, though, were:

Gold: Pizza Port/Carlsbad Poorman’s IPA (they didn’t get to taste it but they reported that the Lou P Lin and the Hop 15 from pizza port were both solid double IPAs)

Silver: Triple Rock Imaxx Imperial IPA

Bronze: Bear Republic APEX

Honorable mention: Pliny the Elder

People’s choice award: Pliny the Younger

All in all they had a great time in the sun – drinking amazing beers with a bunch of hop crazy people.

Can I make a request? Can we get a hold of a few of the top IPAs (your favs and award winners) for next weekend? Aliza’s an IPA fiend.

All of the liquer stores in SB only sell crappy beer, so we’ll have to stock up in SF.
