Monday night was the East Coast/West Coast slam with Dogfish Head and 21st Amendment – “Wanna git my Eastern Peanut Butter in yer Western Chocolate”. Joe and I had the pleasure of sitting across from Amy and Pete (of Pete’s Wicked Ale) Slosberg, who invited us to the beer and chocolate event they’re hosting at Firehouse Brewery this Friday–alas, we won’t make it.
Each dish had a west coast element and an each coast element, and was paired with one beer from each brewery. The biggest surprise for me was 21A’s Smoked Diesel Porter. I don’t usually like smoked beers, but this was well-balanced and I think had the beer pairing of the night with the mini-reuben. The porter-braised short rib and scallop dish was another standout. Some of Joe’s favorite beers were 21A’s Double Triple, their Imperial Pilsner–it was very unique tasting–, and Dogfish Head’s Pangaea–sweet and light, it went really well with the crabcake it was served with. We sat next to a group of homebrewers from Menlo Park–Adrian, Colin, Rob…and one more name that’s grown hazy after Dogfish Head’s Raison d’Extra (18%)! We had a good time drinking with them long after our plates were cleared.
Between courses, Sam Calgione and Shaun O’Sullivan “slammed” each other at the microphone. The highlight of the evening was Sam’s rendition of “Institutionalized” by Suicidal Tendencies. Sorry for the dark visuals–the lighting was too low for us to get any better. The audio turned out great, though, so sit back and listen:
